Bruce Tammen directs Chicago Chorale in their presentation of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Vespers (1915). The composer’s own favorite work, the Vespers is the acknowledged masterpiece of Russian Orthodox liturgical music, and steadily grows in stature with choirs and audiences throughout the world. The sheer richness and beauty of its music, as well as the themes explored through its liturgical framework, appeals to all listeners, regardless of religious persuasion. There will be a pre-concert lecture presented by University of Chicago professor Yaroslav Gorbachev one hour before each concert.
