A service of Tenebrae for Holy Week, with the Cathedral Choir singing Thomas Tallis’s Lamentations of Jeremiah and selections from Gesualdo di Venosa’s and Tomás Luis de Victoria's Tenebrae Responsories, alternating with plainsong psalmody and readings. Translated as ‘shadows’, Tenebrae blends together each of the original three Offices for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday in a dramatic and ancient ritual of extinguishing candles. Set against a backdrop of some of the most evocative Renaissance sacred choral music ever written performed within its intended context, this is a religious and musical experience not to be missed. Free and open to the public.
