VOX 3 Collective presents Fairytales & Folklore - Myth and Fairytale in song

  • PianoForte Foundation 1335 South Michigan Avenue Chicago, IL, 60605 United States (map)

VOX 3 Collective presents a concert featuring enchanted tales of love and longing, adventure and fancy.  European and Middle Eastern folktales come alive in settings by Stenhammar, Haydn, and Schubert, among others. Featured are three larger pieces, in which familiar Greek myths are set by Baroque French, Classical German, and modern American composers. Jean Philippe Rameau’s ravishing chamber cantata Orphée tells the ages-old myth of the musician Orpheus descending to the underworld to retrieve his love Eurydice.  Haydn’s cantata Arianna a Naxos is a tour-de-force for soprano, as she bemoans her fate and lost love on a deserted island.  American John Musto ‘s Penelope dramatically sketches scenes from the Odyssey as the heroine awaits her husband.  Also included are musical fables by Offenbach, antique Lieder by Schubert, and a Swedish-language retelling of Aladdin and his lamp!

Fairytales and Folklore is performed at PianoForte Studios, 1335 S Michigan Avenue on Thursday, April 28 in 2 parts: The first begins at 7:00pm, focusing on antique Greco-Roman mythology.  The second, with stories from Europe and the Middle East, begins at 8:00pm.  Come for one or both programs!
