Eugenia Cheng's Liederstube with special guest baritone Corey Crider

  • Fine Arts Building, Liederstube 410 S Michigan Ave, # 721 Chicago, IL 60605 United States (map)

If you have never been to a Liederstube, THIS would be the one to dip your toes into.  Liederstube is an informal and intimate setting for art song: a studio on the 7th floor of the historic Fine Arts Building (FAB).  Every 2nd Friday of the month is Open Studio night at the FAB.  Pianist, author, and renowned mathematician Eugenia Cheng generously invites singers from the area to sing German Lieder (think Berg, Brahms, Korngold, Schubert, Schumann, Strauss, Wolf), French Mélodies (Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, Hahn, Ravel), and British Art Song (Britten, Butterworth, Gurney, Vaughan Williams, Warlock).  That may seem like a limited span of repertoire for some - but there somehow never seems to be enough time in the evening for everyone to sing all the songs on their wish list.  This is like karaoke for classically trained singers - and more fun than that phrasing sounds.  The hosts offer you snacks and wine - you may contribute your own or not.  You can stay for just one song - or stay the whole night.  Often, Liederstube jams well past the time the building closes and after the elevator operators have retired for the night.  Sometimes, there is a flamenco group that drops in, sometimes there is a beautiful dancer who improvises choreography to the music, sometimes people bring their instruments (there has even been a xylophone in the 'stube).

This month, Liederstube is privileged to welcome international baritone Corey Crider. This is the second appearance of Mr. Crider at Liederstube. On his previous visit, he treated the audience to Vaughan Williams Songs of Travel and an improvised Queen medley accompanied by the flamenco cajòn.  For more about Mr. Crider, just seek him on YouTube or go here--->

Even though EVERYONE who participates will feel like the star of the event, which is true, the real force and joy of this event is Dr. Eugenia Cheng who was recently profiled in the New York TImes, was interviewed on the new Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and lectures on mathematics all over the world while maintaining a rigorous concert  and recital schedule.
