CHAI Collaborative Ensemble presents "A Mother's Love"

  • Atlas Arts Media 1807 West Cuyler Avenue Chicago, IL, 60613 United States (map)

Stories from a dark time in American history, anchored by Evan Williams' A Mother's Love. This expansive work sets poetry by free Black female poets who were involved in the Abolitionist movement. According to the composer, these women “decry the devils of slavery, its destruction of families, and ask fellow white mothers to stand against slavery in the name of love and family.” Rounding out the program are Gabriela Lena Frank's Honey for soprano, mezzo-soprano and piano; Laura Elise Schwendinger's Love Sonnets for mezzo-soprano and violin, which set Shakespeare's Sonnets 116, 147, and 18; and Louise Farrenc's Trio for clarinet, cello, and piano, Op. 44.
