Les Arts Florissants by Vox 3 Collective

In celebration of their 10th anniversary season, VOX 3 Collective returns to Early Music at the Barn with a concert version of Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s chamber opera Les Arts Florissants. Art, Architecture, Poetry, and Music ally with Peace to chase Discord back to Hades in this sumptuous French baroque confection. Harpsichordist Jason Moy heads up the complement of stylish instruments. Theater and ode music of Henry Purcell round out the lovely selections included in this 17th century fête.

Chicago's own Matt Boresi (co-host of The Paternity Test Podcast and satirist for Chicago Parent) penned the libretto for this comic intermezzo in the spirit of Pergolesi's La Serva PadronaThe Filthy Habit updates the story of Wolf-Ferarri's Il Segreto di Susanna for modern times. Set in Manhattan in the summer of 2003, Habit tells the story of a newlywed couple's struggle with Mayor Bloomberg's new smoking ban.  Music by Peter Hilliard.

Dashon Burton is one of the most exciting singers on the concert and oratorio circuit.  He is a graduate of Yale's prestigious Institute of Sacred Music which is churns out top-notch musicians (four at a time) like tenor Derek Chester and soprano Sherezade Panthaki who have also impressed Chicago audiences.  Mr. Burton, a founding member of the charismatic Roomful of Teeth, and Lindsay Garritson present a program that includes Poulenc, Brahms, Vaughan Williams, and Spirituals.

Fonema Consort & Parlour Tapes+ present "Souvenirs: Fonema's Greatest Hits" at Constellation

If Fonema Consort is not on your radar, it should be.  This ensemble, dedicated to commissioning concerted vocal works, features two of the finest singers in the city: co-founder, soprano, contemporary music specialist, and chamber musician Nina Dante; and opera/lieder singer and vocal music entrepreneur, soprano Nathalie Colas.  This concert showcases some of the favorite works in the repertoire they have been building for the past five years. Chicago is lucky to have such fine and stylish musicians dedicated to the cause of new music.

Hansel and Gretel at Thirsty Ears Classical Music Festival

New Moon Opera Company will perform an abridged version of their spring opera, Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck at Thirsty Ears Classical Music Festival.  The opera is accompanied by piano and is family-friendly.  Meet us in the sanctuary of All Saints' Church at 4550 Hermitage Avenue in Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood at 4:30 pm.  Entrance to the performance is free!

Thirsty Ears Classical Music Festival goes from 1 pm to 8 pm, with performances throughout the day, as well as beer for sale, food trucks, and children's activities from 1 - 4.  Entrance to the festival is $5 suggested donation.

This may very well be the last time James Levine conducts in the Chicago area.  Fittingly, it will be an epic and emptional work - Mahler's Resurrection Symphony with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus featuring soloists Ying Fang and Karen Cargill.
