Chicago Choral Artists debut at Chicago Temple - The Story of Jonah

Chicago Choral Artists makes its debut at Chicago Temple with a sacred program about sacrifice and redemption, the centerpiece of which is the fine Italian baroque oratorio Historia Jonae by Giacomo Carissimi. Also on the program, an epic anthem by Gerald FInzi - "Lo, the full, final sacrifice," perfect for a choral ensemble of this size; and a vehicle for  CCA baritone Douglas Anderson, Bach's cantata 158 -Der Friede sei mit dir.

A tour de force early music ensemble based in St. Paul, MN makes a tour stop in Hyde Park with a program that has been in their repertoire for many years "Land of Three Faiths."

The program is described as a haunting, beautiful, and poetic mixture of cultures and music styles performed in six languages and combining Western European ideas and Arabic Classical traditions.

Chicago Master Singers presents Agnus Dei

The spring concert will bring to life sacred masterpieces from Europe and America spanning five centuries. The a cappella program will include works of composers ranging from the late-Renaissance and early-Baroque Dutch composer J.P. Sweelinck to contemporary Norwegian-American composer Ola Gjeilo.

Beautiful sacred works from the romantic era by Liszt, Brahms and Schubert will be sung, featuring Liszt’s stunning Missa Choralis (Choral Mass). Twentieth-century compositions will include Samuel Barber’s setting of the Agnus Dei, a choral transcription of his immortal Adagio for Strings, and works by Hugo Adler and Robert Starer.

Two of Chicago Master Singers’ favorite contemporary composers are Stephen Paulus and Ola Gjeilo. The concert will feature Paulus’s haunting Hymn to the Eternal Flame, from his oratorio To Be Certain of the Dawn, composed in 2005 to commemorate the children lost in the Holocaust. Gjeilo’s works on the program include his recent setting of Ave Maria titled “Second Eve” and his Agnus Dei, subtitled “Phoenix.”
