Liederstube is an informal and intimate setting for art song: a studio on the 7th floor of the historic Fine Arts Building (FAB). Every 2nd Friday of the month is Open Studio night at the FAB. Pianist, author, and renowned mathematician Eugenia Cheng generously invites singers from the area to sing German Lieder (think Berg, Brahms, Korngold, Schubert, Schumann, Strauss, Wolf), French Mélodies (Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, Hahn, Ravel), and British Art Song (Britten, Butterworth, Gurney, Vaughan Williams, Warlock). That may seem like a limited span of repertoire for some - but there somehow never seems to be enough time in the evening for everyone to sing all the songs on their wish list. This is like karaoke for classically trained singers - and more fun than that phrasing sounds. The hosts offer you snacks and wine - you may contribute your own or not. You can stay for just one song - or stay the whole night.
